ABC link exchange (also known as 3 way link exchange) is an SEO link-building strategy in which at least 3 sites are involved to avoid obvious reciprocal link patterns. For the time being, we can name them as Website A, B & C. In ABC link exchange

  • Website A links to Website B
  • Website B links to Website C
  • Website C links to Website A

This is the simplest explanation of the ABC link exchange. When you will be doing ABC link building, you may need to involve more than 3 sites.

This is because your site, Website A, might not be interesting enough to Website B, so you need to arrange some another site that agrees on your site, and Website B is also interested in taking a link from that site. In this case, the new site will work as website A.

If you have read Google’s link spam guidelines, it clearly says that excessive link exchange is considered link spam to manipulate ranking in search engines. If you read carefully, it says the word “excessive,” but it does not put any limit on what will be considered as excessive.

But if you want to do a direct link exchange instead of ABC, in my experience, the sites that do direct link exchanges put the gap of time of at least 1 month to avoid giving any signal to the algorithm of direct link exchange. Try to avoid any patterns, whether they are related to time or links.

If doing direct link exchange is difficult for you to rely on, the safer and more reliable link-building method is ABC (or 3-way) link exchange. So, if you want to email them to publish an article on their website, you’ll rarely get a response. Mailing them for an ABC link exchange increases your chances of getting a response and making a deal with business sites to give you a link on their site.

How to do ABC link exchange?

  • As mentioned earlier, ABC link exchange works best with business sites (e.g., SaaS sites like Hubspot, Salesforce, or other service-based websites like selling some courses, SEO services or some other stuff).

  • You can also get links from them or offer links from those partner sites to other niche-relevant websites in exchange for backlinks.
